Five Shades of Blue

¨In the Mayan language, they had five types of blue that referred to five different species of butterfly. When the Spanish translated the Mayan, they only bothered to translate three types of blue. That means two butterflies stopped existing in one translation. I think that’s a good example of how your understanding of things is held by the language you can use to express it.¨Sam Winston

Sunday, October 13, 2019. Progressive Art Brunch event fro 11 am to 4 pm at 12 art galleries in Miami, Florida. I went to five: Piero Atchugarry Gallery, Emerson Dorsch, N'Namdi Contemporary Gallery, Pan American Art Project and Fabien Castanier Gallery.
I was very impressed with the quality of the artwork I saw today. At Piero Atchugarry Gallery I had the great fortune of joing the art tour by curator and artist Adler Gerrier, who gave an excellent account of the presence of rectangles and the concept of the infinite in the artworks, declaring that a rectangle is a man-made structure since it is not found in nature anywhere. The artwork by Cecilia were stunning, a collage of nude females at the beach covered by a juxtaposition of depictions of the galaxy, to which I commented that there is a theory that says that all humans are made of star dust and another attendee recalled a 60's song by Emerson Lake and Palmer, thereby enriching the discussion. I particularly liked the play of black, grey and white abstract geometry artwork next to  pink/orange triangles painted on a large tarp as well as the photocomposition with an original photograph of Gordon Matta-Clark with a black and white housing unit fractured in two on top and painted geometrical shapes around the border by an artist whose name I was not able to catch. I highly recommend going to visit this exhibition at  5520 NE 4 ave.
Next, I went to Emerson Dorsch, where NY-born artist Elizabeth Condon was presenting her exhibition entitled "Effulgence", which I greatly enjoyed since it relates to flora and nature and birds and home fences. The colors used in the artworks were magnificent as well as the mixture of techniques, including stains of ink and watercolor-like effusions. The artist was there and she gave an explanation of her sources of inspiration.
The next stop was N'Namdi Contemporary, where the owners were extremely pleasant and welcoming and N'Namdi showed us some artwork in his private storage space which were fantastic. This gallery used to be in Wynwood for 7 years but in September relocated to new premises, so this was the gallery's first time participating in Progressive Art Brunch at their new spaces. The artwork displayed in the main room were by Herbert Gentry, who would have been 100 years old this year, and it was a fitting tribute to a talented artist engaged in color and figures. His artwork moved me indescribably, as well as a quote by him on one of the walls which stated: "I am a painter. I paint because I need to do so. All the people I love and ever loved are often found on my canvases - matter of fact, every experience I have is recorded and may flow on to my pictures...". What a marvellous way to sum up what we, as artists, feel !
Also at this gallery I was regaled with a hot bowl of seafood paella soup, which was delicious and a surprise, since I did not expect to find hot food at any of the galleries.
Pan American Art Project presented a body of work by Cuban painter Carlos Quintana entitled "The Diamond's Shadow". Mostly figurative, including many faces and nude bodies as well as a sculpture of a blue elephant with a naked yellow man riding it. I loved the way the artwork was presented on grey walls, which rendered gravitas to the exhibit. Unfortunately, I am not a lover of figurative artwork. Some of the frames were beautifully gilded and were very attractive.
The last gallery I visited was Fabien Castanier, with a performance of a boxing ring entitled Jenkins vs Jenkins, with two standing sculptures of men and one sculpture of a man lying on the floor of the ring and a very attractived long-legged blonde lady in red hot pants and top walking around the room displaying a board that on one side said LOL and on the other, OMG. I immediately felt identified with this piece since I sometimes wrestle with my own self in my own mind and sometimes find myself at odds between the cautious side of me and the happy-go-lucky side of me and it's always a tug-of-war and especially now with the Full Moon in Aries, where we are receiving an activation of what’s under the surface that we can no longer keep within and a realization of what hasn’t been sitting well in us. So something is being called forth in our consciousness to be initiated and this anger may be used to get our attention. Uranus is also quincox to Mars which also indicates an unsettled energy. This full moon is bringing up emotional messages that we are not meant to squash. The soul urges for very deep emotional growth. Aries energy from impatience or impulsiveness needs to mature. All of this energy that’s not letting us feel we can be at peace right now, it’s a dynamic time, as the Mercury retrograde is in Scorpio, and it’s going into the fears, into the unconsciousness, into the fears, and into untapped personal power. Jupiter is helping us move forward because of the fire sign energy. So we should follow the inspiration and motivation, keep our heads up and follow where that motivation and inspiration is showing up and the desire to manifest abundance but at the same time, the unhealed shadow self that is coming up that’s the mean girl, the anger one holds or has, a bitchy critic, anger that is coming through to get our attention, to release it and be on the other side of it.

I paint because I need to do so. All the people I love and ever loved are often found on my canvases - matter of fact, every experience I have is recorded and may flow on to my pictures...".

White´s Art Gallery - Miami, Florida

My first art exhibition in Miami, Florida was at a collective at White´s Art Gallery, owned by Jenirée Blanco, a very famous and well-known Venezuelan TV reporter. The exhibition lasted 5 weeks. The quality of the artwork was heterogeneous and my art stood out as too modern or contemporary. I learned I have to pick and choose the places to exhibit better...

Fountainhead Art Foundation

I received a private invitation to attend a breakfast with artists and the head of the Fountainhead Art Foundation at his private home. I cannot express the happiness I felt, surrounded by art and artists. The owner gave us a private tour of his art-filled house, including the art made by his talented young son, which I singled out in the basement. What a wonderful experience! i felt very thankful for this opportunity. It was a bit difficult to get there because the Uber taxi insisted the satellite said we had arrived when in fact we were still a few houses away and the actual house did not have any identifying numbers on it. At the end of the tour, I lingered on, eating my heart's content of chocolate-filled pastries and coffee. Surprise! the cake with letters in pink icing saying "I Love U" in the kitchen is not a cake at all, it's a sculpture!
There was no internet connection to ask for a taxi so I started chatting up whoever came out to see where they were heading and had the good fortune of being given a free ticket to enter PINTA, the Latin American art tent. I hitched a ride with  an art rep and an artist who had arrived from New York with an express commission for a huge painting at Scope. So all in all, a very happy morning! After visiting a few more private showings in Wynwood, I headed to my two favorite art tents, Pulse and Context, for a wonderful afternoon/evening filled with more beautiful and engaging artwork (photos of which I already posted).
